The multi-family beachside residence asks for a simple and functional contemporary chalet for multiple families with young kids. Located on a narrow and long site, the project responds to the site conditions to form a visually and spatially dynamic design.

Due to the brief and nature of the site, the project utilizes the compound-house typology. This typology has many advantages in both function and design which helps accommodate the extensive program. Consisting of two main chalets and accessory buildings, the design methodology allows for the large program to be dispersed into smaller scale chalets, offering adaptable living whilst balancing privacy, communality, and beach-views for the multiple families sharing the site.

The chalets are located on the site in response to function, views and landscape with a focus on the connection to the outdoors from each chalet. Arranged in a linear fashion, the layout of the building compliments the long narrow site by breaking it down into segments–offering a resort-like layout. The built form prioritizes courtyards, gardens, terraces and canopies to form a coherent whole, giving the variety of different outdoor spaces different scales and functions and helping to break up the narrow and linear site.

Using a unique and minimal material palette, the formal structure is expressed throughout the compound houses both externally and internally, contributing to an overall elegant and subtle architectural language.
